Who we are

Woodruff Piano Studio is a private teaching enterprise based in our home in the historic Woodruff Place neighborhood just east of downtown Indianapolis. We offer individual lessons based on decades of performing and teaching for the full gamut of students-beginners to active professionals. A husband and wife team form the faculty: Junko provides classical instruction rooted in a method which organically and methodically blends technique and musicality. Chris is a professional jazz pianist, bandleader and composer of both classical and jazz works. In addition to dedicated jazz or classical studies, students can opt for a seamless blend of the two, a unique option due the overlapping skill sets of the instructors-Chris has earned a Bachelor's degree in classical piano in addition to his jazz expertise, and Junko has a deep respect for the improvisational American musical language.

Our studio features a Yamaha C6 concert grand piano, supplemented by a second keyboard for accompaniment and jazz bass. Because our overhead costs are low, we can offer the highest quality instruction quite affordably.

We are equipped to provided remote lessons via Zoom with high-quality sound and views from two cameras. See our set up in the Gallery.

We are easily reached from the Michigan St. exit on I 65/70 and a short drive through the Near East Side. Those who don't require the freeway can also drive east on 10th St. past the Bottleworks and Factory Arts District to Woodruff Place. There are numerous fine locally-based culinary establishments in the area, including Side Door Bagel, King Dough (artisan pizza), Amelia's Bread, Legacy Tokyo, and Centerpoint Brewery.
